Lucas Barry is a wine steward at Anguilla’s newest restaurant, Karaya on Shoal Bay West. Also a muralist, tattoo artist and creative at heart, Barry uses anything and everything around him as a source of inspiration for his craft.
Barry started out as a server, but was inspired to pursue a career in wine after experiencing the depth of flavors and nuances wine offers. He has immersed himself in the world of wine and mixology, continuously expanding his palate and knowledge of the industry and incorporating those learnings into creating delicious drinks or choosing the perfect bottle of wine. He honed his skills at one of Anguilla’s most celebrated restaurants, Veya, owned by Chef Carrie and Jerry Bogar. This led him to his new position at the Bogar’s latest venue, Karaya.
Barry’s favorite aspect of service is being asked for a recommendation and then delivering the exact wine or cocktail that makes the guest happy, “When I make a drink, I want to elevate whatever mood the guest is looking for and enhance their overall experience.” A Cadillac Margarita is his go-to drink to make.
For Barry, bartending is an ongoing profession where you are always learning from both mentors and customers, “Each one teaches one, whether it be a guest or a peer in my field.”
